Shipping Lines Detention Policies During
Holiday Season Period
The Shipping Lines Are Not Offering Much In Terms Of
Detention Exemptions
The message is to plan, raise all concerns in advance and organise today!
Important Points to Note:
- Approach from the shipping lines vary
- Most shipping lines may consider some relief, if applied for and the case is genuine
- Importers closing down for holiday period is not considered as a genuine case
- Applications prior to vessel arrival are the ones that will be considered
- After detention has occurred little to no consideration is likely to be given
Hapag Lloyd is offering an Additional Free Time Procurement Option
- At US$35/TEU/DAY, its’ possibly a good option
- You must apply prior to vessel arrival
Industry body Freight & Trade Alliance (FTA) has passed on the below information regarding several of the shipping lines to date.
BAL
- Will be providing 3 extra free days as aligned with the terminal and depot
operations over 25 DEC – Christmas day, 26 DEC – Boxing Day and 1 JAN – New Year’s
Day.
CMA CGM/ANL
- ANL & CMA CGM Group will not be extending additional free days across the
Christmas & New Year Break in Australia.
They will review any individual requests on a case-by-case basis.
COSCO Shipping
- CHARGES ARE PER CALENDAR DAY, INCLUDING WEEKENDS AND PUBLIC
HOLIDAYS.

HAPAG-LLOYD
- Free time commences from the date of discharge from the vessel.
Dry Containers and Special Equipment 8 days,
Reefer Containers 5 days
Free time includes Saturdays and Sundays but excludes National Public
Holidays.
Should members foresee challenges in terms of returning the inventory within
the commercially agreed Free time periods during the Festive Season then they are encouraged to explore Additional Free time Procurement products wherein
additional free time, prior to shipment arrival, can be procured at as very nominal cost
vs the prevailing Tariff costs. Here is a link to the additional free time procurement tool.
MAERSK Line
- For AUS the following days are offered as free time period in addition to
tariff: Christmas (25th Dec) and Boxing day (26th Dec) and New year’s day (1
st Jan 22).

MSC
At the time of publication advice from MSC is that their standard detention conditions
will apply throughout the holiday period.
There will be NO waiver of detention for the listed public holidays.
Customers should reach out to their shipping line representatives should they require
any extra relief with returning empties.
ONE OCEAN NETWORK EXPRESS
- ONE has consideration for our customers over the festive period and we can advise
that public holidays will be excluded during this time. Whilst normal detention tariff will apply, they will consider further exclusions or extensions directly with customers and as such these will be considered on a case-by-case basis

PAS / PIL
- Operating hours remain the same with all branch’s open apart from the closing times below for:
• Christmas Eve (Thursday 24th December 2021) – 12:30 pm
• New Year’s Eve (Thursday 31st December 2021) – 3:00 pm
Detention policy is under review for the holiday period and will be advised asap. Any requests for reductions or waivers are handled on a case-by-case basis, here

- For ZIM Australia detention exclusion days over the holidays will be 25-26th December 2021 and 1st January 2022
