Review Into The Efficiency Of Australia's Maritime Logistics Industry

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced an enquiry into the
Maritime Logistics Industry

A productivity commission is to lead a review to examine many of they key issues in our industry today.  

This will see industry bodies such as Australian Industry Group (AIG), National Farmers Federation, Australian Steel Association, Australian Council of Wool Exporters & Processors, Australian Meat Industry Council and the Australian Cotton Shippers Association collectively addressing these key issues with the Australian government.

Key Areas Of Review:

  • Competition
  • Waterfront industrial relations
  • Infrastructure constraints
  • Technology uptake
  • Regulation of Terminal Access Charges
  • Ensuring fair and reasonable container detention practices

 

Concerns will be to address the issues of business continuity and what is considered to be essential services, to minimize supply chain disruptions.

Terminal charges to be cost recovered directly against the shipping lines and not the transport operators.

Focus will be also placed on reasonable container detention practices, so that the dehire of empty containers are administered fairly.

Looking at setting guidelines for a 30 day notice period for international shipping lines when varying service and costs.

Overall, keeping competition thriving with exclusive dealings between shipping lines and the logistics chain to protect importers’ and exporters’ interests.

The findings are expected to be revealed mid-2022.
